Private John Douglas

Private John Riddell Douglas, 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots. He died in France in the 4th Canadian Casualty Clearing Station at Pernes on 22nd May 1918 after being gassed during the German Spring Offensive and is buried in Pernes British Cemetery, Pernes, France. He had been born in Kelso and was the son of the late James and Margaret Douglas of Horse Market, Kelso. He had moved to Haddington where he worked as a shoemaker. He had enlisted in the 2nd Battalion Royal Scots in March 1915 where he was wounded. Upon recovery he was posted to the 2nd Battalion in France.  The photographs show Allied troops preparing to resist the advancing Germans.
