Private James Young

Private James Young, 10th ( Service ) Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He was killed in action in France on 4th April 1918 during the German Spring Offensive, aged 19. He was the son of Mrs Jane and the late Thomas Young of Gateridge Hall, Makerstoun, Kelso and is buried in Bienvilliers Military Cemetery near Arras, France. He had been born in Greenlaw and  had enlisted in Kelso in November 1914 when he was underage. He was returned home and re-enlisted in 1916 still underage. Eventually this plucky lad went to France with the 8th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders before transferring to the 10th Battalion. The photographs show Allied troops preparing to resist further German advances.
