Private James Wright

Private James Wright, 1st/4th ( Border ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He died in a military hospital in Egypt on 26th July 1915 of wounds received in action on 12th July during the ” Charge ” on the Turkish trenches at Achi Baba Nullah which cost the Battalion very heavily. He was the son of George and Margaret Wright of Tweedside, Sprouston, Kelso and is buried in Alexandra ( Chatby ) Military and War Memorial Cemetery, Alexandria, Egypt. His Headstone is inscribed ” Sweet Memories Mother”. Private Wright came from a famous Sprouston fishing tackle making family which had invented the artificial flies ” Garry Dog ” and ” Greenwell Glory ” Before the war he had worked for Forrest and Sons in Kelso and was a key component of the Kelso Rugby side. ( Thanks to David Welsh for this information ). The first photo shows Achi Baba marked with a cross. This “hill” dominated the battlefield and was never captured. The second shows the Borderers attacking at Gallipoli and the third shows the Battlefield in 1922.
