Private James Watson

Private James Watson, 7th ( Service ) Battalion, Cameron Highlanders. He was killed in action, aged 27, in France on 25th September, 1915 on the first day of the Battle of Loos and is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, Dud Corner, Loos, France. He was the son of Isabella and the late George Watson, 126 Roxburgh Street, Kelso. He fell in the Divisional attack on the German positions in the Hoenzollern Redoubt and Fosse 8.  The first  photo shows an actual attack with the troops disappearing into clouds of gas and smoke. This day was the first time the British Army had used gas.  The second photograph shows the village of Loos after its capture and the third shoes shells bursting on the Redoubt.  The artist’s illustration depicts the Camerons in the attack at Loos.
