Private James Turnbull

Private James Turnbull, 1st/4th ( Border ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He died in Palestine of wounds on 6th April 1917, aged 20, after being struck by a stray Turkish shell. He was the son of James and Elizabeth Turnbull of Kerchesters, Kelso and is buried in Deir El Belah War Cemetery, Israel. His Headstone is inscribed ” His Kindly Smile is With Us Still Lingering, Loth To Part”. The British front lines were near Gaza and at this time whilst there was little combat shelling was frequent and it was here in the outpost line both Private Turnbull and Private Dickson, also from Kelso, were struck by the same shell. Private Dickson also died from his wounds. The photographs show the  Borderers in Palestine in 1917.
