Major James Melrose

Major James Douglas Leitch Melrose, 29th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. He was killed in action in Belgium on 25th April 1918, aged 33, during the German Spring Offensives on the River Lys. He was the son of James Melrose of Goshen Bank, Kelso and the husband of Jessie Macpherson Melrose of 5 Dean Terrace, Edinburgh. He is buried in Abeele Aerodrome Military Cemetery, Flanders, Belgium and his Headstone is inscribed ” He Died For Others”. The Siege Batteries of the R.G.A. normally used the 60 pounder heavy guns to demolish trench systems, supply dumps and transport systems well behind enemy lines.
