Private James Frater

Private James Frater, 16th ( Service ) Battalion, Highland Light Infantry. He was killed in action on 3rd July 1917, aged 22, in a surprise German Offensive on the Flanders coast and is commemorated on the Nieuport Memorial, Nieuport, Flanders, Belgium. He had been born in Yetholm and was the son of the late John and Elizabeth Frater of Yetholm and the Husband of Mary Frater. before enlisting he had been employed as a farm servant at Ednam, Kelso, Roxburghshire His Battalion was a “Pals ” Battalion known as the” Glasgow Boys Brigade ” Battalion having originally been formed in 1914 from both current and past members of the B.B. and was a Unit in the 32nd Division. The attack was meant to disrupt British preparations for the Battle of Third Ypres which opened on 31st July.
