Driver Harry McLeod

Driver Harry McLeod, 56th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. He died on 25th April, 1917 in Mesapotamia, aged 27 and is commemorated on the Basra Memorial, Iraq. He was the son of the late  John and Margaret McLeod who had been born in Kelso but had moved to Glasgow. After they died he and his siblings had been raised by their aunt Ellen Summers in Kelso. He had been employed as a telegraph messenger in Kelso before joining the Army in 1910 and had been  stationed in India for five years.  The Field Artillery normally used the 18 pounder field in an anti infantry role using both high explosive and shrapnel shells one of which is shown below.
