Private George Murray

Private George Murray, 19th (Central Ontario) Battalion, Canadian Infantry. He was killed in action in France, aged 34, on the 28th August 1918 during the “Advance to Victory”. He had been born in Denholm and was the son of Thomas and the late Isabella Murray of Denholm and is commemorated on the Vimy Memorial, Vimy, France. He had been employed as a ploughman at Caldronbrae, Kelso before emigrating to Canada in 1913. There he worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway Company at Perry Sound, Ontario before being drafted into the Army in January 1918. He was killed only three weeks after joining his Battalion in France. He named as his next of kin his sister Helen Murray of Baillieknowe, Kelso. The photos show troops advancing after the retreating Germans during the final 100 days of the War.
