Gunner George Kinghorn

Gunner George Rutherford Kinghorn, “A” Battery, 331st Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. He died in the 36th Casualty Clearing Station in France, aged 21, on 17th September 1917 of wounds received in action during the Battle of Third Ypres and is buried in Zuydcoote Military Cemetery, Nord, France.  He was the son of Jane and the late John Kinghorn of Shedden Park Road and Roxburgh Street, Kelso. before enlisting he had been employed as a butcher in Kelso. The R.F.A. used the 18 pounder field gun normally in an anti infantry role using both high explosive and shrapnel shells.
