Lance Corporal Francis Wood

Lance Corporal Francis Melrose Wood, 1st/4th ( Border ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He died on Active Service of disease, aged 19, on 4th December 1915 in a military hospital on the Island of Lemnos, Greece having been evacuated from Gallipoli. He had been born at Newton Don, Kelso and was  the son of William and Margaret Wood of Newton Don, Kelso and is buried in Portianos Military Cemetery, Lemnos, Greece. His Headstone is inscribed “Till The Day Dawn”. He had been a Member of the 4th Territorial, K.O.S.B. and was mobilised with the Battalion in August 1914 landing on Gallipoli in June 1915.  He had been wounded during the “Charge” on 12th July when the Battalion suffered heavy casualties and was evacuated to hospital in Malta. On returning to Gallipoli he contracted pneumonia and died in hospital on the island of Lemnos.
