Stoker Douglas Irvine

Stoker 1st Class Douglas Irvine, Royal Navy. He was lost at sea aboard H.M. Submarine “Thames” on 3rd August 1940, aged 22. He was the son of John and Isabella Irvine of Kelso and is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial. He was a Regular in the Royal Navy. The submarine was one of the River Class boats and had been launched in 1932 at Barrow-in-Furness. Under the command of Lieutenant Commander Dunkerley she had already torpedoed and sank the German Torpedo boat ” Luchs ” before going missing whilst on patrol in Norwegian Waters. The submarine most likely fell victim to a mine.
