Lieutenant Colonel Donald Farmer V.C., M.S.M.

Lieutenant Colonel Donald Dickson Farmer, V.C., M.S.M., Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders. He was born in 5 Winchester Row, Kelso on 28th May 1877 and when of age he joined the Army.  During the Boer War on 13th December 1900 he was serving in his Regiment as a Sergeant. During an attack on Boer positions 16 men had gone to aid an outlying post when enemy fire caused many casualties. Sergeant Farmer went to assist a wounded Officer and carried him to safety under heavy fire. He then returned to the firing line but was captured. For this deed he was awarded the Victoria Cross. He remained in the Army and eventually reached the Rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He died in Liverpool on 23rd December 1956, aged 79. The plaque in his honour was attached to the wall behind the War Memorial by Kelso branch Royal British Legion on 9th May 1992.
