Private Colin Stewart

Private Colin Stewart, 5th ( Territorial ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action in France on 18th June 1940, aged 23. He was the son of John and Emily Stewart of 10 Roxburgh Street, Kelso and is buried in Cherbourg Old Communal Cemetery, Cherbourg, France and his Headstone is inscribed ” Never Forgotten “. Before enlisting had been employed as a painter in Kelso. The Battalion was part of the Second British Expeditionary Force but had to be withdrawn not long after reaching France although they were involved with several skirmishes with advanced German Units.  They were withdrawn on 18th June 1940 aboard the S.S. “Manxman” and were the last British Infantry unit to leave France.
