Pilot Officer Charles Underwood

Pilot Officer Charles Richard Hamilton Underwood, Royal Air Force. He was lost on Air Operations with 203 Squadron R.A.F. on 28th July 1942, aged 21 and is commemorated on the Alamein Memorial, Egypt. His Squadron flew the Martin Maryland medium bomber on general reconnaissance and bombing duties in the Middle East. He had been born in South Shields and was the son of Hilda and the late Charles Underwood of Floors Gardens, Kelso. He had been educated at Kelso High School and had joined the R.A.F. before the outbreak of War being commissioned in June 1942.
