Private Arthur Kerss

Private Arthur Kerss, 44th Battalion, Canadian Infantry. The Battalion had originally been called ” Manitoba” but was renamed” New Brunswick” in August 1918 ). He was killed in action in France, aged 31, on 3rd September 1918 during the “Advance to Victory” and is commemorated on the Vimy Memorial, Vimy Ridge, France. He was the son of James and Janet Kerss of Shidlaw, Cornhill-on-Tweed, Northumberland. The illustrations and photographs show Allied troops advancing against the retreating German army during the final 100 days of the War. The final photo shows victorious Canadian troops entering the town of Mons which they captured in November 1918 It was here on 23rd August 1914 that the British Army had fought its first Battle of the War and the town had been in German hands since then. The wheel had come full circle.
