Private Andrew Armstrong

Private Andrew Armstrong, 10th Battalion, Canadian Infantry. He died from wounds during the Battle of the Somme in France, aged 26, on the 1st October 1916. He had been born at Mosstower, Eckford and was the son of John and Caroline Armstrong of Kersknowe, Eckford, Kelso. He died in the 6th General Hospital, Rouen and is buried in St Sever Military Cemetery, Rouen. He had emigrated to Canada and was farming near Calgary when he enlisted. By Autumn 1916 the Somme battlefield had been turned into a quagmire of mud as can be seen in the photos.
