Private Alexander Buddo

Private Alexander Buddo, 1st/4th ( Territorial ) Battalion, Royal Scots. He was killed in action in France on 27th August 1918 during the “Advance to Victory “aged 21. He was the son of William and Joan Buddo of 1 Peat Wynd, Kelso and is buried in Wancourt British Cemetery, Somme, France. He fell in the assault on the village of Hendecourt which was part of the vast Hindenburg defence system. The village of Fontaine Les Croiselles was captured and 10 Trench Mortars, 25 Machine Guns and 344 prisoners were taken by the Battalion. Most of the casualties suffered that day were caused by shellfire. His Headstone is inscribed ” A Mother’s Darling Slumbers There “. The photographs show Allied troops advancing against the retreating German army during the final days of the War.
