Private James Frater

Private James Frater, 16th ( Service ) Battalion, Highland Light Infantry. He was killed in action in Belgium, aged 22, on 3rd July 1917 near Nieuport, Belgium during a German pre-emptive strike against British Forces near Lombardzyde in an attempt to disrupt British preparations for the coming offensive at Ypres. He is commemorated on the Nieuport Memorial. He had been born in Yetholm and was the son of the late John and Elizabeth Frater of Yetholm and the husband of Mary Frater whom he had married in Morebattle in 1915. Before enlisting he had been employed as a farm servant in Ednam, Kelso.
