Captain Samuel Stirling Cookson

Captain Samuel Stirling Cookson, 1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers. He was a Regular Soldier and was killed in Belgium during the Second Battle of Ypres on 17th May 1915, aged 23. At that time the Battalion were holding trenches near Zonnebeke in the Ypres Salient. He had been born in Grantshouse and was the second son of Mr and Mrs Charles Lisle Stirling Cookson of Renton and Houndwood and is buried in Dickebusch New Military Cemetery, Belgium where his Headstone is inscribed ” Semper Fidelis”.  He had been a gentleman cadet at Sandhurst when he was commissioned into the R.S.F. in 1911.  He was promoted Captain in November 1914. His brother Captain Charles Stirling Cookson of the Kings Own Scottish Borderers, also a Regular, had already won the Military Cross for gallantry in the Dardanelles.
