Sergeant Robert Aitchison

Sergeant Robert Aitchison, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He served with 102 ( Ceylon) Squadron, R.A.F. and was killed on 17th September 1944 aged 23. He had been born in Hutton and was the son of John and Jane Aitchison of Ferneycastle, Reston and he is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial, Runnymede, England. In 1944 the Squadron was flying the Handley Page Halifax from RAF Pocklington as part of 4 Group Main Bomber Force.  At the time of loss they were on a training flight to dispose of bombs over the North Sea and their aircraft MZ289 DY-J and its crew were lost without trace.
