Lance Corporal George Fair

Lance Corporal George Bell Fair, 15th (Service) Battalion, Royal Scots. He was killed in action in France, aged 24, on 28th April 1917 during the Battle of Arras and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Arras, France. He had been born in Grantshouse and was the son of Margaret and the late George Fair of Cherry Tree Cottage, Grantshouse and the husband of Margaret Fair of Newtongrange.  He had enlisted in December 1915 and was mobilised in April 1916. he was originally posted to the 11th Battalion in France but was transferred to the 15th Battalion in early April 1917. He fell in a disastrous attack on Roeux Wood where in the face of intense machine gun fire and deep wire entanglements the Battalion were unable to make much headway and suffered 300 casualties with 6 Officers and 200 Other Ranks killed.
