Private Alexander Brown

Private Alexander Brown, 1st Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He died in France during the Battle of the Somme on 20th November 1916, aged 25. He had been born in Banchory and was the son of James and Margaret Brown of Strachan, Kincardineshire and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial , Thiepval, France. When he enlisted he had been working as a gardener and then a gamekeeper  at Renton House, Coldingham.  At that time the Battalion was encamped at Carnoy, Somme and were not in action so Private Brown may have died of wounds. The autumn rains turned the ground into a glutinous quagmire making the movement of men and guns very difficult as can be seen from the photographs.
