Private John Buckham

Private John Buckham, 2nd Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action in France during the Battle of the Somme on 25th September 1916 aged 20. He had been born in Longformacus and was the son of Adam and Elizabeth Buckham of Rawburn Cottage, Longformacus, Duns and is buried in Serre Road Cemetery No. 2, Somme, France.  he had been living with his grandmother in Greenlaw when he enlisted. He fell in the successful attack and capture of the village of Morval where the Battalion captured nearly 700 prisoners and 5 Machine Guns. The photos show troops on the Somme and the colour image shows a peaceful Somme landscape today with ” no gas, no barbed wire, no guns firing now”.
