Private James Cockburn

Private James Cockburn,1st/4th ( Border ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in Palestine on 13th November 1917 aged 23. He had been born in Swinton and was the son of James Cockburn of Dairy Cottage, Horstead Hall, Coltishall, Norfolk and is commemorated on the Jerusalem Memorial. He had been born in Swinton, lived in Greenlaw and had enlisted in Berwick. He fell in the successful attack on El Mughar where Turkish casualties were high and hundreds of prisoners were taken. The Battalion had 181 casualties with 4 Officers and 31 Other Ranks being killed. The photos show the Borderers in Palestine in late 1917. His brother William also fell – see above.
