Lance Corporal James Weir

Lance Corporal James Weir 11th (Service) Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He was killed in action during the Battle of Loos on 26th September 1915, aged 20 and is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, Dud Corner, Loos, France. He had been born in Greenlaw and was the son of Samuel and Euphemia Weir of Rumbletonlaw, Gordon and Woodend, Duns and is commemorated on the Loos Memorial. He had been a postman in Gordon before becoming a gamekeeper at Kimmerghame, Leitholm, Berwickshire. 11th Argylls were part of the 15th (Scottish) Division.  He fell in the disorganised attack on the strong German positions on Hill 70 and Hulluch. Some gains were made but could not be held and the attacking Battalions had to retire to below the crest line of Hill 70. The photograph shows the village of Loos after capture.
