Sergeant James Messer, 2nd/4th Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He died on Service in hospital in Chelmsford on 24th February 1916 after an operation to remove his appendix. He had been born in Gordon and was the son of farmer Charles Messer and is buried in Gordon Churchyard. The family had lived in Gordon for generations ( Thanks to Eileen Bell of Gordon for the picture of the ” Death Penny “.
