Private George Dunn

Private George Fortune Dunn, 1st/5th ( Dumfries and Galloway ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was by shellfire in Palestine, aged 33, on 1st November 1917. He is buried in the Gaza War Cemetery, Palestine. He had been born in Foulden and was the son of George and the late Euphemia Dunn of West Foulden Mains and was the husband of Alison ( Spence) Dunn whom he had married in Foulden in 1914. He had been employed as a coachman and gardener at West Foulden before he enlisted, joining his Battalion in Egypt in February 1917. ( Two of Alison’s brothers also fell – see below ). The photographs show Borderers in Palestine in late 1917. The 3 soldiers are Alec Lawrie, Willie Cockburn and Jim Murray who all played football for Coldstream F.C.
