Second Lieutenant John Blumer

Second Lieutenant John Blumer, 283rd Battery, Royal Field Artillery. He died from wounds in France on 26th September 1916 during the Battle of the Somme aged 21. He had been born in Sunderland and was the son of William Gray of Sunderland and is buried in Bronfay Military Cemetery, Bray-Sur-Somme, Somme, France. The standard artillery piece of the Field Artillery was the 18 pounder field gun which used both high explosive and shrapnel shells. examples of which are shown below. The photograph shows the difficulties in moving the guns after the autumnal rains had turned the ground into a glutinous quagmire. ( There is no obvious connection with Fogo ).
