Private George Guthrie

Private George Guthrie, 7th/8th ( Service ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action in Belgium on 31st July 1917 aged 32. He had been born in Fogo and was the son of Michael and Sarah Guthrie of Fogo and the husband of Agnes Robertson ( formerly Guthrie ) of  Waulkmill, Gogo and Fairholme, St Boswells and is buried in Potijze Chateau Grounds Cemetery, Belgium. He fell on the first day of the Battle of Third Ypres in what was labelled the Battle of Pilckem in the attack on a strongpoint named the “Frezenberg Redoubt”. The Battalion took their objectives but at a cost. 6 Officers and 57 Other Ranks were killed and 10 Officers and 240 Other Ranks were wounded.
