Flying Officer William Burgon

Flying Officer William Walker Burgon B.A. , Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He was a member of 74 ( Trinidad ) Squadron, Royal Air Force and was lost on operations on 9th June 1941 aged 24. He had been born in Eyemouth and was the son of Ex Provost John and Isa Burgon of Victoria Road, Eyemouth and is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial. At the time of loss the Squadron was flying fighter sweeps ( known as “rhubarbs” ) over occupied France using the Supermarine Spitfire 11A from its base at R.A.F. Gravesend. He was educated at Eyemouth High School and went up to study at Emmanual College, Cambridge where he gained his B.A. Before enlisting he was working for the Frys Chocolate Company in Bristol. He was a noted cricketer and tennis player.
