Private Robert Waddell

Private Robert Waddell, 14th ( Service ) Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He was killed in action in France on 6th September 1916 during the Battle of the Somme, aged 22. He had been born in Eyemouth and was the son of Christina and the Robert Waddell of 29 Albert Road, Eyemouth and is buried in Maroc British Cemetery, Grenay, France. 14th Argylls were part of the 30th Division. He was killed by a sniper whilst he and his comrades were holding a bombing sap in front of the main trenches. His education was at the Berwickshire High School followed by Skerry’s College in Edinburgh where he passed his exams for the Civil Service. Before enlisting he was employed by the Board of Agriculture. His Headstone is inscribed ” Psalm 23.3″. The photograph shows a group of Highlanders checking a dugout in a captured German trench together with other Scottish troops on the Somme. The colour image shows a peaceful Somme landscape today with ” no gas, no barbed wire, no guns firing now “.
