Private Peter Cowe

Private Peter Nisbet Cowe, 17th (3rd Glasgow) Battalion, Highland Light Infantry. He was killed in action in France on 18th November 1916 aged 34 at the end of the Battle of the Somme.  He had been born in Eyemouth and was the son of William and Jean Cowe of Eyemouth and the husband of Christina Cowe of 11 Newton Port, Haddington.  He is buried in New Munich Trench British Cemetery, Beaumont Hamel, Somme, France.  He had served his apprenticeship as a draper in Eyemouth The Battalion was originally a ” Pals ” Battalion and enlisted from men employed in Commerce in and around Glasgow and was known as the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce Battalion. He had originally enlisted in the Royal Scots but in France was transferred to the H.L.I.  The autumnal rains had turned the ground into a glutinous quagmire which made all movement very difficult as can be seen from the photographs.
