Lieutenant John Spouse

Lieutenant John Spouse, 7th Battalion, Canadian Engineers. He was killed in action in France on 21st July 1918 aged 47. He had been born in Eyemouth was the son of the late William and Sarah Spouse and the husband of Margaret Spouse of 415 Holly Lodge, Vancouver, British Columbia and is buried in Bellacourt Military Cemetery, Riviere, Pas de Calais, France. His Headstone is inscribed “R.I.P.”. He had trained as a teacher and had emigrated to Canada in 1910 to teach Maths and Science. He enlisted in Vancouver in May 1916 and was commissioned in November 1916, going to France in January 1918. He joined his Battalion in June 1918. ( His name was only added to the Eyemouth Memorial in July 2008 and his granddaughter Joan McGiveron from British Columbia was present at the unveiling ).
