Private Farquhar MacRae

Private Farquhar Mathieson  MacRae,  1st/13th London Regiment, ( 1st Kensingtons ). He was killed in action in Belgium on 9th May 1915 during the Battle of Aubers Ridge, aged 32. He had been born in Eyemouth and was the son of Mrs A.M. and the late J.C.C. MacRae of Springbank, Eyemouth and is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Ploegsteert, Belgium.His late father had been Postmaster in Eyemouth and he had left for London Where he had obtained a teaching post. He then found work with the London ” Daily Chronicle ” as a Sub Editor and whilst here he had joined the ” Kensingtons ” a Territorial Battalion going to France in February 1915.  The artillery barrage was feeble and ineffective and the battle was a complete failure costing the B.E.F. 11,000 casualties for no territorial gain.
