Flying Officer Alexander Aitchison

Flying Officer Alexander Swanston Aitchison,  Bsc. (Edin), Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He was a pilot with 247 ( China British ) Squadron Royal Air Force  and was lost on an offensive sweep over occupied Europe on 14th February 1944 aged 22.  He had been educated at the Berwickshire High School, Duns and studied science at Edinburgh University. As soon as he graduated he joined the R.A.F. and trained to fly in the U.S.A. He had been born in Eyemouth and was the son of Alexander and Alice Aitchison of  6 St Ebba Road,Eyemouth and is buried in Orleans Main Cemetery, France. The Squadron flew the Hawker Typhoon as part of the 2nd Tactical Air Force in the ground attack role from R.A.F. Merston. In the run up to D Day the main targets were transport systems and weapon emplacements. His Headstone is inscribed ” How Bright These Glorious Spirits Shine “.
