Gunner Robert Gibson

Gunner Robert Gibson, 22nd Heavy Battery Royal Garrison Artillery. He died in the 17th Casualty Clearing Station in Belgium of a bomb wound to the abdomen on 16th November 1917 during the Third Battle of Ypres, aged 30. He had been born in Duns and  was the son of John and Agnes Gibson and the husband of Ann Gibson of Chirnside Bridge, Edrom. Before enlisting he had been employed as a fireman at the Chirnside paper mill, Edrom and is buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery , Poperinghe, Belgium. After Tyne Cot this cemetery is the second largest Commonwealth cemetery in Belgium with over 9000 burials. The Heavy Batteries used the 60 pounder artillery piece and was used for long range bombardments for targets behind enemy lines. His Headstone is inscribed ” Till The Day Dawns “.
