Private George Swanston

Private George Swanston, 227th Coy. Machine Gun Corps ( Infantry ). He died of wounds in Belgium on 22nd July 1917 aged 22, He had been born at Chirnside Station and was the son of George and Mary Swanston of The Bridge, Chirnside and is buried in Canada Farm Cemetery, Ypres, Belgium.  He had enlisted in the Black Watch under the Derby Scheme and was mobilised in 1916 to be posted to the M.G.C. in France in June 1917. He was mortally wounded in an air raid. The M.G.C used the Vickers Mk. 11 water cooled gun and the photo shows gunners in action.
