Second Lieutenant Alastair Blair

Second Lieutenant Alastair Hunter Blair, 1st Battalion, Cameron Highlanders. He was killed in action in France on 9th May 1915 , aged 19, during the Battle of Aubers Ridge. He had been born in Old Aberdeen and was the son of Major and Mrs Reginald Hunter Blair of Kelloe Mains and Broomhouse, Edrom and he is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, France.  He had been commissioned into the Camerons from the Royal Military College, Sandhurst on the 1st October 1914 and joined his Battalion in France in November. The attack was a complete failure. The German wire was uncut and the artillery barrage was feeble. The Camerons lost 4 Officers killed and the total Army casualties were 11,000 for no territorial gain. The photos show scenes from the Battle.
