Private William Galbraith

Private William Galbraith, 6th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. He was killed in action in Italy on 9th September 1943, aged 30. He was the son of George and Janet Galbraith and the husband of Marion Turnbull of Duns whom he had married in Ednam in 1937. He is buried in Salerno War Cemetery, Salerno, Italy and is also commemorated on the Eccles and Birgham War Memorials. His Regiment had landed at Salerno on 8-9th September ( Operation Avalanche ) and there was fierce fighting in the bridgehead until established. Before enlisting he had been employed at Springhall Farm, Ednam. The photograph shows troops at Salerno.
