Private Charles Thomson

Private Charles Thomson, 1st Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action in France on 30th November 1917 during the Battle of Cambrai, aged 22. He was the son of Mr and Mrs Graham Thomson of Cessford, Roxburghshire and is buried in Fins New British Cemetery, Sorel-Le -Grand, Marcoing, Cambrai, France. He fell in the successful counter attack, known as ” The St. Andrew’s Day Battle”, against the German advance on the village of Marcoing. Casualties were not light, 4 Officers and 51 Other Ranks were killed and 4 Officers and 79 Other Ranks were wounded. His Headstone is inscribed ” Not My Will But Thine Be Done St. Luke 22Ch.42 V “. This Battle was the first time that tanks were used en masse ( 437 ) and on good ground to breach the German lines and the first two photographs shows some of the tanks ready for the Battle.
