Private Andrew Armstrong

Private Andrew Armstrong, 10th Battalion, Canadian Infantry. He died in the 6th General Hospital Rouen, France France on 1st October 1916, aged, 25, from wounds received during the Battle of the Somme and is buried in St Sever, Cemetery, Seine-Maritime, France. He had been born at Mosstower, Eckford and was the son of John and Caroline Armstrong of Eckford. He had been farming in Alberta, Canada when he enlisted in December 1915. The Battalion’s nicknames were ” the Fighting Tenth” and the “White Gurkhas”. The autumn rains had turned the chalky nature of the ground into a glutinous quagmire making all movement very difficult as the photographs show.
