Private William Cockburn

Private William Cockburn, 7th/8th ( Service ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action in France on 23rd July 1918 aged 24. He had been born in Whitsome, Berwickshire and  was the son of Mrs Margaret Hill of  Hassington Mains ( Eccles Parish ) and Spittal-on-Rule, Jedburgh and is buried  in Buzancy Military Cemetery, Aisne, France.   He had originally enlisted in the 2nd K.O.S.B. but had been transferred.  On that day the Battalion attacked strong German positions  between Rosieres and Buzancy. the Artillery barrage was ineffectual and the enemy machine guns were not suppressed. Casualties were again heavy with 4 Officers and 95 Other Ranks were killed or missing and 7 Officers and 214 Other Ranks were wounded. Little ground was gained.
