Piper Leslie Ross

Piper Leslie Ewing Ross, 4th Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed by accident on 7th January 1945, aged 23. He had been born in Meggat, Selkirkshire and was the son of David and Catherine Ross of Lauder and Eccles and is buried in Brunssum War Cemetery, Holland. He was the brother of Albert Ross ( also 4th Battalion ) who owned the Wood Yard just outside Coldstream. He was killed during a Mine lifting operation when 2,300 mines accidentally exploded killing 17 K.O.S.B. and 30 Royal Engineers. He had been born at Meggat, St Marys Loch and was a keen member of the Local Territorial Army Detachment. He was an expert piper  and a member of the Territorial K.O.S.B and had joined the Battalion pipe band  when he enlisted. His two brothers also served, David with the Royal Artillery and Albert with the R.A.S.C. attached to the Guards Division . His father had served through out the Great War with the Royal Army Veterinary Corps where he had been Mentioned In Dispatches. He is also commemorated on the Lauder War Memorial. His Headstone is inscribed ” We Oft Recall The Happy Times We Spent With You Leslie. All At Home”.
