Gunner George Somerville

Gunner George Somerville, Royal Navy. He died in Edinburgh, aged 21, from T.B. and meningitis on the 15th June 1918. He had been born in Carstairs in 1897 and was the son of William and Rachel Somerville of Eccles Tofts, Eccles. He was a farmer at Elwartlaw, Greenlaw . He failed to be granted exemption from service in the Armed Forces and joined the Royal Navy and he served as a Gunner aboard the battleship H.M.S ” Dreadnought” from March to September 1917 before being discharged through illness in October 1917. He died in an Edinburgh Nursing Home. ” Dreadnought” was the very first modern battleship launched in 1907 but saw little wartime service although she was credited with ramming and sinking a German submarine.
