Private William Turnbull

Private William Turnbull, 1st/4th ( Border ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He died  in Gallipoli of wounds on 15th July 1915 received in the “Charge ” on the Turkish trenches at Achi Baba Nullah on 12th July 1915, aged 29. He was the son of James and Mary Turnbull of Lindean, Earlston and is buried in Lancashire Landing Cemetery, Helles, Gallipoli, Turkey. His Headstone is inscribed ” Greater Love Hath No Man Than This St. John XV.13 “. His father was a contractor in the town and he had worked as a Railway Carrier. He left a wife and two children. The first photo shows Achi Baba, the objective of the attack, marked with a cross. This “hill” dominated the battlefield and was never captured. The second shows the Borderers going over the top into attack. ( The author’s Great Uncle Corporal James Murray was also wounded during the ” Charge “and spent six weeks in hospital in Alexandria before re-joining the Battalion at Gallipoli ).
