Private William Waddell

Private William Waddell, 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders. He was killed in action in Flanders on 2nd March 1916, aged 21. He had been born in Edrom and was the son of James and Mary Waddell of 3 Golden Square, Duns and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.  He had served his apprenticeship in Duns and was working as an assistant grocer in Aberfeldy when he enlisted in the Royal Army Medical Corps in February 1915. He later transferred to the Gordons and went to the Front in August 1915. He fell in the abortive attack near Reninghelst where the Battalion suffered 245 casualties.
