Private William Hogg

Private William Hogg, “B” Coy., 1st/4th ( Border ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action in France on 5th June 1918, aged 22. He had been born in Duns and was the son of Elizabeth Mary Hogg and the late William ( Sculptor ) of 11 Langtongate, Duns and is buried in La Targette British Cemetery, Neuville St. Vaast, France At the time the Battalion were holding trenches in the Arleux sector and suffered casualties from desultory shellfire, one of whom was Pte. Hogg. His Headstone is inscribed ” 3rd Son Of The Late W. Hogg, Sculptor & E. M. Hogg, Duns “. Before enlisting in June 1915 he had been employed as a grocers assistant in Duns. He was posted to the Battalion in Egypt but his troopship the S.S.”Ivernia” was torpedoed and sunk in the Mediterranean off Cape Matapan. He was picked up 24 hours later. He served in Palestine where he was wounded before the 52nd ( Lowland ) Division was transferred to France in April 1918 to help stem the German Spring Offensives.
