Private Telfer Lough

Private Telfer Sanderson Lough, 1st/4th ( Border ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action in Palestine on 28th November 1917, aged 20. He was the son of William and Annie Lough of Market Place, Duns and 60 Eskside, Musselburgh. He was a native of Duns and a faithful member of Christchurch, Duns. He is buried in Ramleh War Memorial, Palestine, Israel and his Headstone is inscribed ” The Lord Knows Best”. Before enlisting he had worked as a gardener at Manderson House, Duns. He fell in the attack on the Turkish positions in the village of Suffa where the Battalion together with the 1st/5th Royal Scots Fusiliers and the 1st/5th Kings Own Scottish Borderers were involved in fierce fighting as the Turks repeatedly counter attacked. The Battle raged for two days but the line held firm. Finally the Turks were exhausted and retreated. Casualties were 1 Officer and 7 Other Ranks were killed and 1 Officer and 22 Other Ranks were wounded. The photos show Borderers at Ramleh in late 1917. The three soldiers are Alec Lawrie, Willie Cockburn and Jim Murray all of whom played for Coldstream F.C.
