Sergeant Robert Wightman

Sergeant Robert Wightman, 7th/8th ( Service ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He died on 13th June 1918 of wounds received in action in France, aged 23. He had been born in Duns and was the son of Alex and Magdalene Wightman of 5 Easter Street, Duns and is buried in Aubigny Communal Cemetery Extension, France. Before enlisting in June 1915 he had been employed in a grocery in Duns. He was posted to France in early 1917 and was wounded in July 1917. During this period Mat till July the Battalion were on trench duty on the Scarpe Ridge near Arras and he had been leading a patrol which was ambushed with all the men being wounded. They were rescued and went to the 57th Casualty Clearing Station at Aubigny where Sergeant Wightman and one of his comrades died.  Before enlisting he had worked for Mrs T. Robertson, Grocer, in Duns. His Headstone is inscribed ” Henceforth There Is Laid Up For Me A Crown of Righteousness “.
